Home to King Alfred the Great in the 8 th century, Lewisham remained a village until the arrival of the railways in the 19 th century when the area became popular with commuters and large family homes with spacious gardens began to spring up. Despite significant bombing and fatalities during the World War II Blitz and a period of post war decline, Lewisham has seen significant regeneration since the s to restore the area to its former glory. New homes, improved amenities in the town centre, leisure facilities and transport links have all been introduced with more still to follow.
Despite the number of new build developments, you can still find plenty of charming Edwardian and Victorian properties too. Lewisham station is a terminus for Docklands Light Railway services to Tower Gateway, Stratford International and Bank which is less than 30 minutes away. DLR services to Canary Wharf take just 16 minutes. Lewisham station also has rail services on the Southeastern line to London Bridge in 12 minutes, Waterloo East in 16 minutes, Cannon Street in 18 minutes, Charing Cross in 22 minutes and Victoria in 27 minutes.
Whilst there is currently no underground service locally, plans to extend the Bakerloo Line to Lewisham are in the pipeline and it is possible to pick up the London Overground at nearby New Cross or New Cross Gate.
For drivers, the A20 runs through Lewisham and will take you to Kent. Both the M25 and London City Airport are less than half an hour away and Gatwick can be reached in just over an hour. The A South Circular and the A2 are also nearby. For cyclists there are a number of routes locally for commuting or a scenic cycle, including the Waterlink Way , and a number of incentives from Lewisham Council like free cycling lessons and a bike loan scheme.
For the younger members of the family, Lewisham offers plenty of classes and groups and the Borough of Lewisham is home to a number of popular nurseries.
There are also a number of Asian and Middle Eastern supermarkets locally. Foodies are spoilt for choice in multi-cultural Lewisham. The impressive Model Market brings together the best of street food, bars and music in an old s market hall just off the high street. Despite its urban location, Lewisham is home to a number of green parks and outdoor spaces.
