So I pulled it off and there is two sets of old contact cement on it. I have tried all the usual solvents: mineral spirits, lacquer thinner, acetone and Goof Off. All to no avail. The only thing that seems to work at all is WD40, but even with that it is a tedious process.

I would have thought lacquer thinner would have done it, it certainly works well when it is "fresher". I can't think of anything else that wouldn't also remove paint. Perhaps setting it up with something so that it can "marinade" a while?

Wouldn't take it all off at once, just soften the top layer so I could scrape that away. Haven't had occasion to try it on contact cement, but I suspect that Loctite gasket removal stuff would work too. It's slow, but it has eventually softened everything I've tried it on, including old Permatex.

Solvents will get some of the cement, but will drive the rest further into the wood grain. A grinder with 36 grit will do the trick but leave a very rough surface. The best solution is to glue a new laminate on top. Maybe soften first with acetone, then use a shave hook, provide good ventilation! I'd scrape it with a chisel and see how long it takes to do say 2 square inches and extrapolate to see the hours.
