In the same way that waxes are beneficial to paint, regular application of wheel wax will protect those precious alloy rims while giving it a sleek shine! Finding the best wheel wax has been somewhat of a tougher task than I had first imagined. I talk later about the differences between waxes and sealants, and also which is best, coming to an interesting conclusion.
Sealants are formulated in a different way than waxes. Sealants are designed to chemically bond with the molecules in the surface. Unlike wax that only sits on the surface, the curing property of sealants enables them to provide a more durable layer of protection against dirt and environmental pollutants.
This product will literally seal the surface of the alloy wheels to offer outstanding protection. It also makes the wheels easier to clean with just a single application. The dirt and brake dust will simply slide off the wheels with a short blast of pressurised water!
The Collinite is a carnauba-based liquid wax that acts as a sealant. When applied to paint, it can deliver a bright and glossy shine especially on black cars with the longevity of a synthetic-based sealant.
The brand has been making inexpensive and high-quality detailing products since Collinite is not a wheel wax per se, but it happens to perform quite well when applied to alloy or aluminium wheels. A single coat of this fine product will shield your wheels from dirt, brake dust, and other harmful contaminants. What I really like about the Collinite is the price. It is one of the cheapest car waxes you can buy. It can deliver the quality and pristine finish of more expensive brands without burning a gaping hole in your pocket.
The Collinite Liquid Insulator Wax is easy to apply by hand or machine. You only need a little of this product to go a long way. Simply apply a thin coat of the wax over a clean and dry surface, allow the wax to dry to a haze, and buff lightly using a microfiber towel. This wax offers a solid layer of protection that can last for many months, even when the wheels are constantly exposed to excess heat, UV, and harsh weather.
For a durable wax that is ideal for all painted or smooth surfaces, it is hard to ignore the Collinite For all intents and purposes, the Smartwax Rim Wax is not an abrasive polish similar to polishing products for paint. It just happens to provide a stronger cleaning action that can easily remove bonded brake dust, asphalt, road grime, and corrosion from alloy wheels.
The Smartwax Rim Wax is a professional wheel cleaner and sealant. It is designed to work on all types of alloy or aluminum wheels. It is also ideal for all metal or chrome surfaces, such as exhaust tips. The unique formula is strong enough to remove thick asphalt, tar, and brake dust without harming or scratching the finish.
It also leaves a clear layer of anti-static protection to seal the metal from further contamination. I also found out that multiple applications are required in order to elevate the levels of protection. If your wheels are extremely dirty and mucky, the Smartwax Rim Wax is one of the best choices. The Smartwax applies easily and dries to a haze in a couple of minutes.
The name is not the only similarity between this category and the waxes and sealants for paintwork, because the same fight between different formulas continues.
On paint, traditional waxes have retained their advantage, but on wheels, where the coatings have to cope with heat from the brakes, new sealants have had the edge in our tests.
For our test we applied a range of products to a large wheel, and monitored grime build-up over six weeks. We took price into account, including the long-lasting nature of hard waxes, and how easy they were to apply. There was a period when the original Wonder Wheels alloy cleaner dominated our tests with repeated wins, and now its sealant is threatening to do the same.
This is its third win on the bounce after a couple of podium finishes. It may have become the dominant force, but this was still a close-fought test, with all our top four very tightly matched on the wheel as the miles increased. While performance was at the heart of this test, Wonder Wheels had a price advantage over its rivals, which secured a clear win.
You need to set aside a little time to apply the aerosol spray, because the wheels need to be thoroughly cleaned and dried before spraying on Wheel Sealant. It then needs to be left for at least an hour to cure,. Buy now from Amazon. Former winner Autoglym has to settle for a commendation here. The similarity extends to its application, because Wheel Protector also needs to go on to clean, cool, dry rims before being left untouched for at least an hour — the longer the better — to fully dry before using the car.
So far I am very pleased with the results. More effective than I initially thought. April 18, I bought a used F with some blingy 22" chrome rims with deep barrels. The rims were pretty neglected, and the deep barrels really accumulated brake dust.
I wanted to protect the rims and keep them looking good, so I bought this based on the reviews. I was running out of daylight when I got to the rims, so I cleaned and polished everything but only waxed the barrels as a test. The wax went on easily, smelled nice kind of like orange creamsicle , and really brought the rims back to their former glory.
A little went a long way. The truck isn't my daily driver, so I didn't rack up that many miles, but I did drive it in the rain a lot. After about month, I gave the rims a good look before washing the truck, and I was a bit disappointed to see how much brake dust accumulated on the barrels given how little I had driven it.
However, the barrels had almost no brake dust compared to the spokes and rim face, which I hadn't covered, so Wheel Wax really did what it is supposed to do. That sold me. Plus, all the dust washed off with a blast from the hose.
It's now been 2 months and 2 washings, and it's about time to re-coat the wheels. Given the amount of rain we've had in that time, that seems pretty reasonable. I want to try it on the clear-coated wheels on my daily driver next. Pros Really does keep down the amount of brake dust, enhances shine, easy to apply, smells nice. First rate product March 3, This is an excellent product that will last for a few months at the most.
It's very effective not only at beading water on the wheel but very good at keeping brake dust accumulation to a minimum. I thought I would try another wheel glaze that I thought might be better but definitely was not. Brake dust would start accumulating after about a week whereas the Wheel Wax kept accumulations down two weeks or more.
I've learned my lesson about using a good product. If it works well, don't replace it but it is one way to find out how effective one product is compared to another.
I wanted my Wheel Wax back and it's for this reason I will be highly recommending this product. Pros Longevity: It will last for a few months before re-application is necessary. Keeps brake dust down. You can go about two weeks or a little more without brake dust becoming an issue. Does an excellent job of beading water and keeping grime and other dirt off the wheel longer.
Cons Even when kept at a cool room temperature, the product will break down from a pudding-like consistency to a soup-like consistency after more than six months.
It still seems to work but may not be as durable in its more solid form. View All Reviews. Great Wax December 22, It's a good wax I use it on all my cars it holds up very well easy on easy off what more can you ask for. April 18, I bought a used F with some blingy 22" chrome rims with deep barrels.
