Eight official port cities will host the event which has been billed as the "largest gathering of tall ships in world history. During the four-day Connecticut event, hundreds of thousands of visitors descended upon the area by car, boat and train to attend four distinct festivals and to take advantage of opportunities to board tall ships at different locations in New London and Groton.
Kellogg and his father-in-law's tale of how the Ukraine ship sailed to America to participate with little funding and even less high-tech gadgetry has enthralled crowds on every OpSail event point from Norfolk to New London. Unlike the magnificent Esmeralda, the state-sponsored pride of Chile that has drawn three-hour waits for visitors to board, the Bat'kivshchyna has drawn crowds of another sort -- the ones that are pining for a piece of their homeland, the ones that love a good yarn and the ones that can appreciate a sea captain's steadfast desire to let the world see a glimpse of the country that he calls home.
I am finally seeing a piece of my homeland. On this last day of Connecticut's OpSail, the captain has taken a break from the exuberant crowds by spending time with a New London family that he lived near in the Ukraine more than 25 years ago. Meanwhile, Kellogg is manning the ship -- even though he admits he's not a sailor -- and greeting the hoards who have come to take a look at the tiny ship that braved the Atlantic at all costs to bring their message to America.
