You can express yourself in a way that is truly you and find your unique style and techniques. Do you like minimal embellishments? One large photo or lots of small images? When you sit down to scrapbook, the first benefit is choosing the time for yourself.
Taking time for yourself is such an essential factor in self-care and overall health. Once you start working on your scrapbook, your brain will release dopamine.
For more information on the correlation between crafting and your mental health click here and here. Many people equate crafting with meditation. It gives you focus, you begin to concentrate on your scrapbook, other thoughts disappear, and you get into the zone. Your stress starts to melt away. Scrapbooking is also an enjoyable hobby for seniors. It helps keep their mind active as well as bring back fond memories of past events and their family.
One of the best parts of scrapbooking is all the new friends you make. Often called crops, scrapbooking retreats or workshops, they are a great time.
Groups of scrapbookers get together to share inspiration, tips, laughter gossip and usually involve pizza, appetizers and wine.
Unfortunately, the disappearance of many local scrapbooking stores has made these in-person crops harder to find, especially in smaller towns.
Luckily there is a way to connect with other scrapbookers now also to connect online. There are many forums, online classes and even virtual retreats you can join. Scrapbooking is such a great hobby to start. The online, digital sharing world appealed to many—particularly those on the fence about scrapbooking. Now we know what a great thing Facebook has been for us who have stuck with scrapbooking and paper crafting.
We now have so much inspiration right at our fingertips, not to mention the amazing online community. Or the fact the I can learn from pros like Vicki Boutin or Paige Evans from the comfort of my craft room. Everyone who decided to keep on scrapbooking needed to adapt to a changing industry resulting in the internet and digital world revolutionizing and reinventing scrapbooking in a whole new way. How many of you print off your pictures?
Not many, I would guess. Digital cameras and cell phones have revolutionized photography. But one downside of this is the sheer quantity of photographs we now have.
I have a huge stack of photos sitting on my desk and shake my head as I look through them. Why did I print off every single picture? Many of them are almost identical. Remember when you had to wait to get the film develped to see your photos? We were so excited to see what gems were on that roll. We dropped them off for processing as soon as possible.
Now with digital, we see them right away so their no rush. We look, take another if necessary and turn off the camera. Making some people feel embarrassed to share their interest in the hobby with their friends and family because of it. However, if they are crafty and artsy kids, they will likely find their way to scrapbooking one day and love it! Scrapbooking has done a fantastic job of changing with the times, and with scrapbooking becoming ever more present online which is exactly where it needs to be able to reach this new demographic.
Although the article references crafts other than scrapbooking, I think the sentiment remains, and we could also apply this to up-and-coming Generation Z.
Make sure to give the comments a read; they are enlightening. Many people decide to start scrapbooking when they start a family. But still, many youths opt to keep all their photos and memories in the digital world or on social media. While many scrapbookers preserve their memories for themselves and their family, much of the culture for the younger generation is social media.
Yes, lots! Although the number of scrapbookers has declined significantly since the s, many people still love to scrapbook and participate in all things paper crafting. Many people did quit scrapbooking.
Today, local scrapbooking stores are harder to find, and big box stores that once dedicated aisles to the hobby are now on to the next big thing. Of course, this totally depends on where you live in the world too. But from my tiny little corner of Earth, scrapbooking supplies are rarely found outside of specialty stores in a city. Even the selection at Michaels is quite sad. Talk about overwhelm. In addition to scrapbooking supplies being harder to find in-store, the scrapbooking retreats are almost non-existent unless you live in the city or are lucky enough to have a local scrapbooking store in your area.
Or maybe a really awesome dedicated person who loves to plan! These groups are the new face of scrapbooking. You can so easily access classes, tutorials, and a community right from your own home. Will younger generations have any interest in physical books, or will they only want to see their memories via social media? And I hope many others do as well. Scrapbooking is only another form of art.
It is a tool to record your life, express yourself and show the world who you are. It has given me some extraordinary lessons, memorable moments and life-long friends. Also, I was so thrilled to take part in several online crops, workshops and classes during this difficult time. Thank you for reading! Very informative. I teach a staff inservice class on writing stories from daily life. I think maybe some fell away from scrapbooking because they failed to find the conflict in their stories they were telling.
It becomes a pile of things-we-did with no opposition. Those things woven into the story better define us. We sell minimal amounts and most of the spacee is dedicated to creating because of the very things mentioned in this article.
We are trying to keep it going!! Hi Diana, This sounds amazing! So awesome you are able to keep scrapbooking alive in your community. Thanks for your post. It explains a lot. Ten years ago I took a trip to Australia, which had been a lifelong dream for me. Of course, I took tons of photos. Those photos have just been in boxes for all these years. Thanks so much for visiting! Click here to join! We switched to card making.
We use the same supplies and get to still be creative. No photos, no unfinished albums, smaller finished product. And an added bonus, I now have cards for family and co-workers for events I never celebrated. As Dexter Morgan so eloquently put it, in response to his sister, Scrapbooking is the tradition of putting photos and memorabilia into a family keepsake album along with relevant journalising Source: Showtime Drama Series Dexter, Season 3 Episode 2, Finding Freebo.
Scrapbooking can be dated back to the 15th century with the emergence of commonplace books, then friendship albums in the 16th century followed by school yearbooks in the 18th and 19th century and with the later invention of modern photography as noted in www. However, modern scrapbooking began in the early s with Marie Christensen and the opening of the first scrapbooking store which she and her husband started in Utah. Scrapbooking has emerged as a very popular pastime, even more than golf, due to many reasons such as:.
Technology has facilitated increased interest in scrapbooking with the constant improvements in digital cameras which enable people to take as many pictures as they desire, with the only restriction being the size of their camera memory cards. Many people have camera phones as well and generally there has been an increased interest in taking pictures of everyday events. In addition, there are many computer software photo editing programmes which open up a world of opportunities to improve on a photo, make changes to it and spice it up a bit!
The word is getting out on scrapbooking through cable television craft shows, magazines publications and Internet websites which provide tutorials on how to scrapbook, teach various techniques, and provide ideas on various layouts and themed pages etc. These various forms of media capture a wider audience globally and aids in increasing the popularity of scrapbooking.
A relatively new phenomenon is scrapbooking cruises. All these avenues facilitate scrapbooking becoming such a sensation globally.
