They are all like Sodom to me They will speak truth in a spirit of humility. Many of the prophets in the Bible spoke with authority and boldness, but all of them spoke in humility. Jesus was the ultimate example. They announce sins before promising blessings: A blessed life is no good if you're still lost in your sins.
God has always had the condition of obedience before blessing. In Lamentations b we read, "Your wound is as deep as the sea. Who can heal you? The visions of your prophets were false and worthless; they did not expose your sin to ward off your captivity.
The oracles they gave you were false and misleading. They offend many. People do not want the truth; hence, prophets are not usually popular. Isaiah says, "These are rebellious people, deceitful children, children unwilling to listen to the LORD's instruction. Tell us pleasant things, prophesy illusions. Leave this way, get off this path, and stop confronting us with the Holy One of Israel!
They won't predict "new truths" about end times and their words will not conflict with or go outside the bounds of scripture. Revelation says, "If anyone adds anything to what is written here, God will add to that person the plagues described in this book. One way God established the legitimacy of a prophet was by giving them clear, concrete, short-term prophecies.
In Jeremiah 28, we see a false prophet named Hananiah stand up and declare that Israel would be victorious within 2 years. Jeremiah This year you are going to die, because you have counseled rebellion against the Lord. And because Jeremiah was a true prophet of the Lord, his clear and specific message happened exactly as God said it would. No true prophet of God ever had a prophecy fail, because no prophet spoke out of emotion, opinion, or selfish motivation.
When we evaluate the words of those who claim to be prophets, we must expect every prophecy to be fulfilled because anything else would require God to be incapable of doing what He says will happen.
But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. Hebrews The world is filled with truth claims. Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
We are called to glorify God with our minds, using them to hold up everything against His timeless truth. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ 2 Corinthians When it comes to prophecy, we need to look beyond what we think it is, and instead go directly to the entire Bible to understand what it truly is.
While the prophet of God receives revelation and inspiration to guide the Church as a whole, revelation flows at every level, including to the leaders of congregations and to individual families and members.
In fact, individual members are expected to seek that kind of divine guidance to help them in their own lives, in their responsibilities in the Church and even in temporal pursuits, including their occupations.
